Actress Greta Garbo’s longtime refuge in New York City, a full-floor co-op on Manhattan’s East Side, is now on the market for a smidge under $6 million.

The three-bedroom, three-bath apartment, which claims East River views from every room, is owned by the reclusive film legend’s niece and sole heir, Gray Reisfield. Reisfield and her husband lived in the 14th-floor apartment from 1992 to 2013.

Garbo, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the 1920s and ’30s, lived in the sprawling apartment for 40 years, drawn to the building at 450 East 52nd Street “because the passing boats reminded her of her beloved native Stockholm,” according to the listing.

The apartment, which Reisfield updated, features a private elevator that opens to a formal entrance gallery, an L-shaped living room with working fireplace, a library/den paneled with knotty pine, and french doors that open to a balcony. The apartment, located on a quiet cul-de-sac, also includes cedar-lined closets throughout and a separate laundry room.

“It’s amazing, really beautiful,” says Brian Lewis, who is co-listing the apartment with William Kerr, both of Halstead Properties. “Every room fronts the river, which makes it very special. It’s sprawling, and there’s a real warmth to it. It’s the kind of place you don’t want to leave, which is why Garbo didn’t for over 40 years.”

Garbo is known for her starring roles in “Mata Hari,” “Grand Hotel,” and “Ninotchka.” Although she was nominated three times for an Oscar, she landed only an honorary Oscar awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts in 1954. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on its list of greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema: Katharine Hepburn was first.

“I want to be alone,” her character’s famous plea in “Grand Hotel,” became Garbo’s signature line and seemed to describe her avoidance of publicity after retiring from the cinema in the early ’40s. She never married nor had children. She died in 1990; she was 84.
