Liberty Walk Working on Ford Mustang Widebody Kit

Liberty Walk Working on Ford Mustang Widebody Kit

Liberty Walk body kits aren’t just for supercars and exotics anymore. The Japanese tuner wants to turn your new Mustang into a fender-flared head-turner.

The performance house posted a couple of recent photos to its Facebook and Instagram pages. It’s still a work in progress, but the Mustang widebody kit looks pretty bold and is sure to annoy the usual Cars & Coffee crowd.

It looks a little bit like the Shelby Super Snake Wide Body Concept we saw earlier this summer, except it has even wider front fenders with visible rivets, and a smoother, sleeker hood design.

The Super Snake concept packs a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine that offers 750 hp, but nothing is known about Liberty Walk’s take on the American muscle car except what we can glean from the photos.

Aside from the mega fender upgrades, the 50th Anniversary edition 2015 Ford Mustang seen in the photos gets a new hood, front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, and an old-school ducktail spoiler.

If you don’t like Liberty Walk’s Mustang widebody kit, it will also bring out a Nissan GT-R and a new Acura NSX to Las Vegas in November for the annual SEMA show.

Report: Stephan Winkelmann to Leave Audi Sport for Bugatti

Report: Stephan Winkelmann to Leave Audi Sport for Bugatti

According to Autocar, Stephan Winkelmann will leave his post as CEO of Audi Sport to head Bugatti. He will replace current Bugatti boss Wolfgang Dürheimer, who is expected to remain chairman of Bentley.

Winkelmann will leave Audi Sport later this year, capping off a short tenure. He joined Audi’s high-performance division in March 2016, and during that time, he oversaw a company name change and the rollout of the R8 Spyder and RS 5 Coupe. Before this gig, he spent more than 11 years leading Lamborghini and helped the brand triple its number of dealerships.

As the new president of Bugatti, Winkelmann will likely lead the introduction of new Chiron variants, including the possible Chiron Grand Sport and Chiron Super Sport. Meanwhile, Michael-Julius Renz will step up to take the reins at Audi Sport. Since 2015, he has led Audi’s sales division in China and previously served as head of sales in Germany.

Looking toward the future, Audi Sport is likely to receive its own hypercar at some point. Or at least that was Winkelmann’s vision for the brand. In a recent interview with Automotive News, Winkelmann said he envisions a low-volume exotic sports car that slots above the R8. “I’m very keen on working on this in the future,” he said. “I think not only the brand deserves it, but there is a demand outside, and the [customers] are looking into it.”

Autocar says it’s likely that Winkelmann will eventually replace Dürheimer in his role as chairman of Bentley as well. Although it’s unclear when he will depart, Dürheimer’s contract is reportedly set to end in mid-2019.

Meanwhile, Audi is keeping mum about the reports. The automaker told Motor Trend that it doesn’t comment on speculation.

Detroit Electric Still Alive, Possibly Kicking Off Full Lineup Soon

Detroit Electric Still Alive, Possibly Kicking Off Full Lineup Soon

Do you remember Detroit Electric, the electric car company that was started by a former Lotus executive? The electric car company that was supposed to be headquartered in Detroit, disappeared for a while, and resurfaced in the U.K. with a Chinese partner? Well, after successfully delivering its first production car, the SP:01, back in 2015, the company says it plans to expand its range and offer more models.

Detroit Electric says we’ll get more details next month when it gives a presentation at Cenex’s Low Carbon Vehicles event on September 6 and 7. But for now, it says a full lineup of electric vehicles is on its way thanks to a $1.8 billion cash injection from its joint venture partner, Far East Smarter Energy. That also means hiring 150-200 new employees by next spring. The company will expand its engineering and manufacturing facility in the UK so it can open a new research and development center. It’s currently working to establish a manufacturing facility in China.

“Having secured the solid financial foundation to embark on our business plan, we’re now building up our team to enable us to deliver our ambitious vehicle engineering programs,” said Richie Frost, Detroit Electric’s Chief Technical Officer, in a statement. “This represents an opportunity to be a major part of an incredibly exciting, fast-moving company, as we begin the most exciting EV development projects in the UK.”

Obviously, $1.8 billion is a humongous amount of money, but building cars is tremendously expensive. If Detroit Electric wants to add sedans and SUVs to its lineup, $1.8 billion might not be enough. But at the same time, it’s encouraging to see an electric automaker succeeding and taking chances.

Still, with a name like Detroit Electric, it’s a shame the SP:01 isn’t available in the U.S. As of right now, there don’t appear to be any plans for Detroit Electric to change that.

How Would You Configure Your 2019 Bentley Continental GT?

How Would You Configure Your 2019 Bentley Continental GT?

Earlier this week, Bentley showed off the all-new Continental GT. With a 626-hp W-12 under the hood, it’s able to hit 60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds—quicker than the Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe. Inside, the redesigned interior wraps you in high-end quilted leather, wood trim, and metal accents. There’s also a new rotating display that hides the infotainment system when it isn’t needed. It’s ridiculously cool even if it’s entirely unnecessary.

While Bentley isn’t delivering new Continental GTs just yet, it did just launch its online configurator. And that means it’s time to figure out exactly how you’d spec your car.

First, there’s the paint color. Bentley offers 17 different colors as standard. But why stick with a standard color like Portofino or Thunder when you could have one of the 13 available extended paint selections? Forget Camel. At least spring for Verdant.

Of course, then you have to pick the right wheels. There are eight options to choose from, but we say go big or go home. Skip all five 21-inch wheels and pick one of the three 22-inch Mulliner Driving Specification wheels. We’re partial to the polished alloys, but you can’t go wrong with the other two, either.

Next, you have to pick the leather. But unlike a normal car, you have to decide on a main leather, a secondary leather, and how you want the colors split. There are 13 main hides and 10 secondary hides, all of which can be configured five different ways. Once that’s done, you have to pick the wood for your cabin because, well, what Bentley would be complete without an acre of wood trim? There are eight kinds of wood to choose from, as well as the option to pick between a single finish and a dual finish. Do you want Liquid Amber over Piano Black or Piano Black over Liquid Amber? Deciding can be so hard.

You’re not done yet, though. Next, you have to pick the stitching. Contrast? No contrast? Contrast stitching and seat piping? What about the Bentley emblem? Do you want a blind stitch or a contrast stitch? And what about the steering wheel? There are four different versions to choose. And once you have your steering wheel picked out, you have to pick out the carpets. Should they match the primary or the secondary hide?

Then, just when you think you’re almost done, you get to the list of optional equipment. There are seven different specifications you can choose, like the Touring Specification that adds lane assist, adaptive cruise control, night vision, a head-up display, and something called Bentley Safeguard Plus. And even then, there are five more sub-categories to work your way through. Do you want the four-piece luggage set? Which sound system do you prefer? Should you get illuminated treadplates?

When you’ve finally picked out your perfect Continental GT, though, don’t expect to see a price. At least for now. Instead, there’s the option to send your specifications to a dealer, as well as a personal commissioning code. We assume pricing will be added once Bentley announces it, but for now, you can safely assume it’ll be at least $200,000 before options.

Of course, if you want something truly unique, you could always call up Mulliner and have your car completely customized.

Magna Introduces Autonomous Driving Platform

Magna Introduces Autonomous Driving Platform

From automakers, suppliers, and tech companies, it seems everyone wants to build a platform for autonomous cars. Now Magna is joining the fray by introducing its own self-driving system at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

Dubbed MAX4, the platform enables Level 4 autonomous driving. Vehicles at this stage of autonomy can make key driving decisions without the help of a human driver. And unlike many other self-driving systems, MAX4 integrates LiDAR, cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and a computing platform into a vehicle’s body. That means no sensors adding bulk to the roof or taking up space inside the interior.

Magna says its platform is compatible with vehicle platforms from any automaker. It’s flexible, upgradable, and scalable for high-volume production, plus it requires less power compared to other solutions, the company claims.

“Our focus is on developing production-ready solutions that offer flexibility to integrate and the framework to enable Level 4 technology for when the market is ready,” said Magna Chief Technology Officer Swamy Kotagiri in a statement.

Drivers can control when they want to travel in autonomous or manual mode. With the push of a button, users can engage or disengage autonomous driving. Also much like a cruise control system, pressing the brake pedal also deactivates the feature.

There are plenty of players vying for attention in this space. As just one example, BMW, Intel, Mobileye, FCA, and Delphi have partnered up to develop a common autonomous platform the industry can use for self-driving cars. Google, and more recently its autonomous car spin-off Waymo, have worked for a long time on self-driving tech as have a host of automakers and even ride-sharing companies like Uber.

Watch the video to see MAX4 in action on a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Toyota Will Reveal New Land Cruiser, C-HR Concept in Frankfurt

Toyota Will Reveal New Land Cruiser, C-HR Concept in Frankfurt

Toyota will reveal two vehicles at the opposite ends of the size spectrum during the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. The new Land Cruiser will make its world premiere alongside a special C-HR concept.

Unfortunately, Toyota is saying very little on what to expect from the new large SUV. But rest assured it will maintain its body-on-frame construction that separates it from the sea of crossovers on the market. “The new Land Cruiser will take you wherever you want to go. And bring you back,” Toyota says cryptically in a press release.

The current-generation Land Cruiser debuted for the 2008 model year here in the U.S. As we noted in our most recent review, the model has aged gracefully and continues to impress with its smooth powertrain, controlled ride, and exceptional off-road capability. The SUV features a 5.7-liter V-8 engine producing 381 hp, enough to go from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, according to Motor Trend tests.

Toyota will also reveal a C-HR design concept vehicle in Frankfurt. Judging from this teaser image, a future C-HR model could feature a more aggressive design than the standard version, and possibly increased performance. “Its intention is to emphasize C-HR’s emotional and powerful look, while hinting at future expansion of Toyota’s hybrid powertrain line up within its core models,” the automaker says. Toyota already has a hybrid C-HR in global markets, so it will be interesting to find out what the company has up its sleeves with this model, dubbed the C-HR Hy-Power concept.

The new Land Cruiser and C-HR concept will drop September 12 just ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show.
